This Lumber Grading Reference Manual is directed towards practicing lumber graders and graders-in-training to ensure that the NLGA Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber are applied consistently and follow the same principles and techniques across Canada.

The Manual provides background and guidelines for the practical application of grading rules to grading lumber. In addition, for information and training purposes, general background is presented on lumber grading, grader training, organization of the Canadian lumber quality system, and integration of lumber design values into the building code systems in Canada and the U.S.

Throughout this Manual, references are made to specific paragraphs or clauses in the NLGA Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber (NLGA Grading Rules), Special Products Standards (SPS), and the Canadian Lumber Grading Manual (CLGM) which are published by NLGA. These paragraph or clause references provide additional background information for the users of the Manual.

The Lumber Grading Reference Manual is an information resource for grading students and other users in the lumber industry.  It has been compiled to provide general background and outline practices for grading lumber.

It is not intended as a replacement for the NLGA Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber and must not be relied upon for grading rules and interpretations. The NGLA Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber may be amended from time to time and accordingly where there is a conflict between it and this manual, the NGLA Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber will govern.
